FAQs - General

Here are some of the questions we have been asked by our riders. Please contact us if you have any queries. We will add your question to our list if we think it will be helpful to other bikers!

What bikes do we get to ride?

You will be using our new Aprilia Pegaso Trails. These are proving to be ideal, they are reliable, versatile and easy to handle with plenty of power plus they have a very comfortable riding position.

Can I bring a pillion?

Yes, we'll limit the routes to tarmac roads. If we do go on gravel the support truck is in attendance to carry the pillion to safer ground.

What's the accommodation like?

For details on the “Sinurambi” go to www.borneocountrystay.com. When we are away we stay in the best hotels available or superb private villas.

I want to climb Mt. Kinabalu. Can I spread my riding to fit in this and other activities?

Yes. Please let us know what you want to see and do while you are in Borneo and we can usually accommodate your wishes.

What is the food like?

At Sinurambi we eat both Eastern and Western style food. If you want to stick to western food it’s no problem, Italian, Spanish, German restaurants are easily available. There are KFC's, MacDonald's, Burger Kings and Pizza Huts around town but, if you are slightly adventurous, Sabah offers some of the finest, freshest and most varied food in the world.

I want NO hidden extras!

Please see our information web page where we have a detailed list of everything that comes with your Borneo Biking Adventure and also a small number of things that are not included. If in doubt please ask.

What support do we get when we are out on the bikes?

Your guide is always in attendance. He carries a first aid kit, satellite phone, mobile phone, basic tool kit, puncture repair kit and water.

On some trips the 4X4 will also be in attendance, this is even more comprehensively equipped.

What about navigation?

The usual format is a briefing every night prior to the next day's run. Navigation notes are handed out. These are very brief as towns and villages are few and far between and consist normally of simply a cross roads. You will be issued with a map, pre-programmed and pre-paid cell phone and there is a simple procedure to recover lost bikers.

Can I ride on my own?

Of course. Each rider sets his own pace and your guide brings up the rear. Food stops are on your nav notes and we meet up at meal times or at strategic points along the way.

How tough is the biking?

We describe it as “soft roading”. Most of our roads are tarmac, deserted and offer some of the best biking in the world. There are sections of gravel and occasional land slides to negotiate. These are easily handled on the Pegaso Trails.

Some of our routes incorporate tougher stuff. These are only included on request. Terry is a 65 year old, “Born Again” and Bryan, 5 times British Motocross Champion. Between these two levels of skill there are adventures for everyone!

What is the local night life like?

Most of the down town hotels and resorts have their own clubs and bars with live bands every night.

KK city has a great number of night spots catering for every taste.

Start at the Water Front, drop into the Irish Pub for a cool Guinness then stroll along to Shenanigans for a taste of the local atmosphere. You'll find Sabahans very friendly, eager to make friends and nearly all speak excellent English.

I may want to take some time off from riding.

This is YOUR paradise adventure, "The Best of Biking with the Best of Borneo". If you need a day off the bike just let us know, there are loads of alternative activities and things to do..

What is the standard of Medical care in this part of the world?

There is a first class private medical care in Kota Kinabalu. Sabah Medical Centre is located in a brand new “state of the art” hospital. Most of their Doctors and Surgeons are trained in the US, UK or Australia. Remember, the bikes are insured but you are not! You MUST get medical insurance before you come to Sabah.

Can I ride my bike in the evening?

No. Company policy is that, for safety reasons, bikes are never ridden after dark.

What interesting things am I likely to see?

To list the exciting and unusual things to see in Sabah would take up several pages.

Proboscis monkeys, macaques, Orang Utan, monitor lizards, pangolins, otters, slow loris, pigmy elephants, huge fruit bats, horn bills, crocodiles, fire flies, water falls, pristine rivers teeming with fish, millions of swallows leaving their roost, insect eating pitcher plants, the rarest of orchids, the most venomous and the biggest snakes in the world, volcanic hot springs, mud geezers, the oldest rain forest in the world, shoals of tropical fish on un-spoilt colourful reefs, the 8" Raja Brooks butterfly, the 3" Rhinoceros Beetle, columns of bats leaving some of the largest caverns in the world, Raffelesia, the biggest flower in the world.

ALL these amazing things have been seen by riders on our trips.
Come join us, it's a trip of a life time!

What is the best time of year to come?

Any time of year. We ride all year round. Since "Global Warming", "El Nino" and extensive deforestation, the wet and dry seasons have become less clearly defined. When it does rain, it RAINS, usually around 4 o'clock but it soon stops and it's always warm.

Will we get mixed in with another group of riders with different ability?

No. Remember, our maximum group size is six. If we get riders of different abilities Bryan will take the hot shoes, Terry guides the more dignified riders and we meet up along the way.

I am a vegetarian?

No problem. The range of fresh fruit and veggies here is astounding.

Do I have to come on your set tour dates?

No. We’d love to see you any time. You may join up with another small group or just go riding with Terry or Bryan.
